Introduction｜はじめに
Red and golden maples.
A peaceful pond.
Temple halls along the hillside.
赤や黄金色に染まるもみじ。
静かな池。
山の斜面に寄り添うお堂。
Eikando Temple is known
for its beautiful autumn leaves.
But among these familiar views,
there is something unusual.
永観堂は、
美しい紅葉で知られるお寺です。
けれど、その境内には、
少し不思議な場所があります。
A wooden corridor
winds along the hillside.
It is called Garyuro,
the Sleeping Dragon Corridor.
山の斜面に沿って、
曲がりながら続く木造の回廊。
その名は、
「臥龍廊（がりゅうろう）」。
Why was it given
the name of a dragon?
どうして、この回廊には
龍の名前がついているのでしょうか？

A Temple on the Hillside｜山の斜面に建つお寺
Eikando stands
at the foot of Kyoto’s
Higashiyama mountains.
Its temple halls stand
at different heights
along the hillside.
永観堂は、
京都・東山のふもとにあります。
境内のお堂は、
山の斜面に沿って
異なる高さに建っています。
Wooden corridors
connect these buildings,
following the shape
of the terrain.
それらをつないでいるのが、
地形に沿って続く
木造の回廊です。
The Winding Stairs｜曲がりながら続く階段
Look at the wooden stairs.
They do not follow
a single straight line.
Instead, they bend and turn
along the steep slope.
木造の階段を
よく見てみましょう。
まっすぐではなく、
急な斜面に沿って
曲がりながら続いています。
A roof stretches overhead.
Wooden railings follow
the winding path.
The corridor seems
to flow through the trees.
頭上には屋根が続き、
木の手すりも
曲がる道に沿っています。
まるで木々の間を
流れていくような姿です。
Why a Dragon?｜なぜ龍なの？
The name Garyuro
offers a clue.
Garyu means
a dragon lying down.
その名前に、
ひとつの手がかりがあります。
「臥龍」とは、
横たわる龍のこと。
The winding staircase
resembles a dragon
lying on the rocks.
曲がりながら続く階段の姿が、
岩の上に横たわる龍に
似ていることから、
その名がつけられました。
Its unusual shape
also reflects
the steep mountain terrain.
その独特な姿には、
山の急な地形も
関わっています。
Temple records mention
the construction of Garyuro
in 1504.
Its history stretches back
more than 500 years.
寺の記録には、
1504年に臥龍廊が
建立されたと記されています。
その歴史は、
500年以上前に
さかのぼります。
Another Way to See the Corridor｜見方を変えてみる
From one end,
the stairs stretch away
beneath the wooden roof.
From another angle,
their winding shape
becomes easier to notice.
一方から眺めると、
屋根の下に階段が続きます。
別の角度から見ると、
曲がり方が
よりはっきり感じられます。
Knowing its name,
we may begin to imagine
a dragon resting
along the hillside.
名前の由来を知ると、
山の斜面に横たわる龍の姿が
想像できるかもしれません。
Notice how the roof
and stairs bend together.
If you can view the corridor
from another permitted angle,
compare its shape.
屋根と階段が
一緒に曲がる様子に
注目してみましょう。
見学できる場所から
角度を変えて眺めると、
龍の姿を想像しやすくなるかもしれません。

永観堂に残る物語と風景
Mikaeri Amida｜振り返る阿弥陀さま
Eikando is also home
to Mikaeri Amida,
the Looking-Back Amida Buddha.
Unlike most Amida statues,
its face turns
over its left shoulder.
永観堂には、
「みかえり阿弥陀」が
安置されています。
多くの阿弥陀如来像とは違い、
顔を左後方へ向けています。
According to temple tradition,
the story dates back to 1082.
While the monk Yokan
was practicing nenbutsu,
the statue began walking
ahead of him.
寺に伝わる物語は、
1082年にさかのぼります。
永観律師が念仏の修行を
していたとき、
阿弥陀如来像が
前を歩き始めたといいます。
Yokan stopped in surprise.
Amida turned back and said,
“Yokan, you are slow.”
驚いて立ち止まった永観律師に、
阿弥陀さまは振り返り、
「永観、おそし」と
声をかけたと伝えられています。
The looking-back posture
is often seen
as a symbol of compassion.
It suggests a Buddha
who does not forget
those who fall behind.
その振り返る姿は、
慈悲の心を表すものとも
受け止められています。
後ろにいる人を
忘れずに見守る阿弥陀さま。
The statue is designated
an Important Cultural Property
of Japan.
It is enshrined
in the Amida Hall.
みかえり阿弥陀像は、
国の重要文化財に
指定されています。
現在は阿弥陀堂に
安置されています。
Hojo Pond｜放生池に映る景色
Near the center
of the temple grounds
lies Hojo Pond.
A small island,
a bridge,
and a stone torii gate
create a peaceful view.
境内の中央付近には、
放生池が広がっています。
小さな島と橋、
石造りの鳥居が
穏やかな景色をつくっています。
The bridge is called
Kinun Bridge.
On calm days,
the trees and bridge
may be reflected in the water.
橋の名前は「錦雲橋」。
風の穏やかな日には、
木々や橋の姿が
水面に映ることがあります。
Tahoto Pagoda｜多宝塔と京都の眺め
Higher on the hillside
stands the Tahoto Pagoda.
Rising above the trees,
it is one of Eikando’s
distinctive landmarks.
山の斜面の高い場所には、
多宝塔が建っています。
木々の上に姿を見せる、
永観堂ならではの
建物のひとつです。
Stone steps lead uphill.
From the higher grounds,
visitors can enjoy
views across Kyoto.
上へ向かう道には
石段があります。
境内の高い場所からは、
京都の街並みを
見渡すことができます。
Autumn and Fresh Green Leaves｜紅葉と青もみじ
Eikando has long been known
as a temple of maple leaves.
In autumn,
red and golden colors
spread across the grounds.
永観堂は古くから、
「モミジの永観堂」として
親しまれてきました。
秋には、
赤や黄金色の葉が
境内を彩ります。
Yet autumn is not
the only beautiful season.
Fresh green maples
bring a peaceful atmosphere
in spring and summer.
けれど、
美しいのは秋だけではありません。
春から夏には、
青もみじが
穏やかな景色をつくります。
Garyuro Corridor is scheduled
to be closed to visitors
from November 11 to December 6, 2026.
