A magnificent wooden stage
stretching out over a hillside.
Historic temple buildings
surrounded by the mountains of Kyoto.
山の斜面に大きく張り出した木造の舞台。
京都の山々に囲まれた歴史ある堂塔。
Founded in 778,
Kiyomizu-dera has welcomed worshippers
for more than 1,200 years.
清水寺は778年に開かれ、
1200年以上にわたって
多くの参詣者を迎えてきました。
But why was such a large wooden stage
built on the steep slopes
of Mount Otowa?
では、なぜ音羽山の急な斜面に、
これほど大きな木造の舞台が
造られたのでしょうか。
どうして崖の上に舞台を造ったのかにゃ？
清水の舞台に隠された物語
The Beginning of Kiyomizu-dera｜清水寺の始まり
The story of Kiyomizu-dera
began in 778,
when a monk named Kenshin,
later known as Enchin,
travelled to Mount Otowa.
清水寺の歴史は778年、
のちに延鎮と名乗る僧・賢心が
音羽山を訪れたことから始まります。
According to temple tradition,
he was guided by a dream
and discovered a waterfall
with clear flowing water.
寺に伝わる物語では、
夢のお告げに導かれ、
清らかな水が流れる瀧を
見つけたとされています。
Later, the warrior
Sakanoue no Tamuramaro
and his wife helped establish
a temple dedicated to Kannon.
その後、坂上田村麻呂とその妻が、
観音さまを祀る寺院の建立に
力を尽くしたと伝えられています。
The temple was named Kiyomizu-dera,
meaning “Pure Water Temple,”
after the clear water
of Otowa Waterfall.
音羽の瀧の清らかな水にちなみ、
「清水寺」と名付けられました。

Kiyomizu-dera suffered many fires
throughout its long history.
Most of the main buildings seen today
were rebuilt in the 17th century.
清水寺は長い歴史の中で
何度も火災に見舞われました。
現在の主な堂塔の多くは、
17世紀に再建されたものです。
Why Build a Stage Here?｜なぜ崖の上に舞台を？
The famous Kiyomizu Stage
extends outward from the Main Hall,
high above the steep hillside.
有名な清水の舞台は、
本堂から急な斜面へ
大きく張り出しています。
Standing approximately 13 meters
above the ground below,
it offers wide views across Kyoto.
崖下からの高さは約13メートル。
京都の街を広く見渡せる場所です。
But the stage was not originally built
simply to enjoy the scenery.
しかし、この舞台は、
景色を楽しむためだけに
造られたものではありません。
It was created as a place
to dedicate music, dance
and other performing arts
to Kannon, the temple’s principal deity.
観音さまに音楽や舞などの芸能を
奉納するための場所として
造られたのです。
Wooden Architecture｜舞台を支える木組み
The stage is supported
by 18 large zelkova pillars,
connected by thick wooden beams.
舞台を支えているのは、
18本の大きな欅の柱。
太い木材が組み合わされています。
This traditional construction method
is called kake-zukuri.
The main wooden framework
is assembled without nails
at its joints.
この伝統的な建築方法は
「懸造り」と呼ばれます。
主要な木組みの接合部分には
釘を使わず、
木材を組み合わせています。
The pillars and beams
support one another,
allowing the large structure
to stand on the steep slope.
柱と梁が互いに支え合うことで、
急な斜面に大きな建物を
築いているのです。

The Japanese expression
“to jump from the stage of Kiyomizu”
means making a bold decision
with great determination.

It is a place where traditional craftsmanship
and centuries of prayer come together.

Otowa Waterfall｜清水寺の名前の由来
Below the Main Hall,
Otowa Waterfall flows
in three streams.
本堂の下には、
三筋に分かれて流れる
音羽の瀧があります。
Its clear water gave
Kiyomizu-dera its name
and has been respected
as sacred water for centuries.
この清らかな水が、
清水寺の名前の由来となりました。
古くから神聖な水として
大切にされてきました。
Visitors receive the water
using long-handled cups
and offer prayers
for purification and blessings.
参詣者は柄の長い柄杓で水を受け、
心身を清め、
願いを込めてお参りします。

The three streams are often associated
with academic success, good health
and good relationships.
However, different traditions
have developed over time.
三筋の水には、
学問成就・健康・縁結びなどの
御利益があるといわれています。
ただし、長い歴史の中で
さまざまな説が伝えられています。

West Gate｜夕日に込められた祈り
Near the Niomon Gate
stands the West Gate,
a beautiful structure
rebuilt in 1633.
仁王門の近くには、
1633年に再建された
美しい西門が建っています。
The gate has long been associated
with the setting sun
and the Buddhist belief
in the Western Pure Land.
西門は古くから、
西に沈む夕日と
仏教の西方極楽浄土への信仰に
結びついてきました。
A practice called Nissokan
involves contemplating the setting sun
while imagining the Western Pure Land.
夕日を見つめながら
西方極楽浄土を思い描く修行は、
「日想観」と呼ばれます。
For people in the past,
the sunset was more than
a beautiful view.
It was also a moment of prayer.
昔の人々にとって夕日は、
美しい景色であると同時に、
祈りを捧げる時間でもあったのです。
Zuigudo Hall｜暗闇を歩く胎内めぐり
Zuigudo Hall is known
for an unusual experience
called Tainai Meguri.
随求堂では、
「胎内めぐり」と呼ばれる
特別な体験が知られています。
Visitors walk through complete darkness,
following a rope
made to resemble large prayer beads.
大きな数珠を表した綱を頼りに、
真っ暗な空間を
ゆっくりと進みます。
The journey symbolically represents
passing through the womb
of a bodhisattva.
これは菩薩の胎内をめぐることを
象徴した体験です。
Unlike the open views
from Kiyomizu Stage,
this experience invites visitors
to focus on their senses
and thoughts.
清水の舞台から眺める
開放的な景色とは対照的に、
自分の感覚や心に向き合う
静かな時間を過ごせます。

From the paths around the Main Hall,
look for a view of the stage
from the side.
You can appreciate its wooden structure
and the surrounding hillside together.
