Introduction｜はじめに
Kiyomizu-dera
is one of Kyoto’s
most famous temples.
Founded in 778,
it has welcomed worshippers
to the slopes of Mount Otowa
for more than 1,200 years.
Its wooden stage,
historic buildings,
and sacred waterfall
make it one of Kyoto’s
most memorable places to visit.
清水寺は、
京都を代表する
寺院のひとつです。
778年に開かれ、
1200年以上にわたって
音羽山を訪れる
多くの参詣者を迎えてきました。

The history of Kiyomizu-dera
began in 778.
According to the temple’s history,
a monk named Kenshin,
who was later known as Enchin,
received guidance in a dream
and travelled to Mount Otowa.
There,
he found a waterfall
with clear flowing water
and met an ascetic named Gyōei.
清水寺の歴史は、
778年に始まります。
寺に伝わる歴史によると、
のちに延鎮と名乗る僧・賢心が
夢のお告げに導かれ、
音羽山を訪れました。
そこで清らかな水が流れる瀧を見つけ、
修行者の行叡居士と
出会ったと伝えられています。
Two years later,
the warrior
Sakanoue no Tamuramaro
visited Mount Otowa.
He and his wife,
Miyoshi no Takako,
helped establish a temple
dedicated to the Eleven-Faced
Thousand-Armed Kannon.
The temple was named
Kiyomizu-dera,
meaning “Pure Water Temple,”
after the clear water
of Otowa Waterfall.
その2年後、
武人の坂上田村麻呂が
音羽山を訪れました。
坂上田村麻呂は、
妻の三善高子とともに、
十一面千手観世音菩薩を
御本尊とする寺院の建立に
力を尽くしたと伝えられています。
清らかな音羽の瀧の水にちなんで、
寺は「清水寺」と
名付けられました。

many fires
during its long history.
Most of the temple buildings
seen today
were rebuilt in 1633.

The Niōmon Gate,
West Gate,

Niōmon Gate｜仁王門
The Niōmon Gate
is the main entrance
to Kiyomizu-dera.
The earlier gate
was destroyed by fire
during the Ōnin War in 1469.
The present gate
was rebuilt
around the year 1500.
仁王門は、
清水寺の正門です。
かつての門は、
1469年に応仁の乱の戦火で
焼失しました。
現在の門は、
1500年前後に
再建されたものです。
Its vivid vermilion color,
large wooden structure,
and gently curved roof
create an impressive entrance
to the temple grounds.
Two guardian statues
stand inside the gate,
protecting the sacred area.

堂々とした入口を
つくっています。

The West Gate

the Niōmon Gate.
The present structure
was rebuilt in 1633
and is designated

The gate has long been associated
with the setting sun
and the Western Pure Land
in Buddhist belief.
Looking toward the setting sun
while contemplating
the Western Pure Land
is part of a Buddhist practice
known as Nissōkan.

西方極楽浄土と
深く結びついてきました。

The Three-Storied Pagoda
is one of the most recognizable
buildings at Kiyomizu-dera.
Standing approximately
30 meters high,
it is one of the largest
three-storied pagodas in Japan.
三重塔は、

建物のひとつです。
高さは約30メートルあり、
国内最大級の三重塔として
知られています。
The pagoda
was first built in 847.
The present structure
was rebuilt in 1632
and is designated
as an Important Cultural Property.
Its vivid vermilion color
can be seen
from many parts of Kyoto.

Dainichi Nyorai
is enshrined
inside the pagoda.

The hall is also known
for “Tainai Meguri,”
a symbolic journey
through complete darkness.
Visitors walk slowly
through the darkness
while holding a rope
made to resemble

The journey
symbolically represents

Main Hall｜国宝・本堂
The Main Hall
is the center
of prayer and worship
at Kiyomizu-dera.
The present wooden building
was rebuilt in 1633
and is designated
as a National Treasure.

清水寺の信仰の中心となる

国宝に指定されています。
The sacred principal image
is the Eleven-Faced
Thousand-Armed Kannon,
a bodhisattva representing
great compassion.
The image is normally hidden
in the innermost sacred area
of the Main Hall.

秘仏のため、
通常は本堂の最も奥にある

Although Kiyomizu-dera

The famous
Kiyomizu Stage
extends outward
from the Main Hall

The stage stands
approximately 13 meters
above the stone foundations below.

有名な「清水の舞台」です。
舞台は、
崖下の礎石から

by 18 large
zelkova pillars.
Thick wooden beams
pass through the pillars
to form a strong
interlocking framework.

in three streams.

long-handled cups
to receive the water
