A bright vermilion gate.
Lanterns hanging around a dance stage.
And quiet prayers in the heart of Gion.
鮮やかな朱色の門。
舞殿を囲むたくさんの提灯。
そして、祇園の町に息づく祈り。
Yasaka Shrine has long been
a place where people pray
for protection from illness
and peaceful everyday life.
八坂神社は古くから、
疫病退散や無病息災を願う
人々の信仰を集めてきました。
But how did these prayers
become the famous Gion Festival
celebrated in Kyoto today?
では、その祈りはなぜ、
京都を代表する祇園祭へと
つながっていったのでしょうか。
A Shrine Known as Gion-sha｜かつて祇園社と呼ばれた神社
Yasaka Shrine has a history
stretching back more than 1,300 years.
For centuries, it was widely known
as Gion-sha, or Gion Shrine.
八坂神社には、
1300年以上にわたる歴史があります。
かつては「祇園社」と呼ばれ、
多くの人々に親しまれてきました。
When epidemics threatened the city,
people turned to the shrine
to pray for protection
and the return of peaceful days.
疫病が広がった時代には、
病が鎮まり、穏やかな日々が戻るよう
人々は祈りを捧げました。
■ Memo｜八坂神社という名前
The name Yasaka Shrine
was officially adopted in 1868,
during the Meiji period.
「八坂神社」という名称になったのは、
明治時代の1868年です。
The Main Hall and Gion-zukuri｜国宝・本殿と祇園造
At the heart of the shrine
stands its National Treasure Main Hall.
Its broad roof is one of
the building’s distinctive features.
境内の中心に建つのが、
国宝に指定された本殿です。
大きく広がる屋根が

The main sanctuary and worship area
are brought together
beneath one large roof.
This style is known as Gion-zukuri.
本殿と拝殿を
ひとつの大きな屋根で覆う造りは、
「祇園造」と呼ばれています。

A Festival Born from Prayer｜祈りから始まった祇園祭
Today, the Gion Festival
is famous for its magnificent floats
and lively streets in July.
現在の祇園祭は、
豪華な山鉾とにぎわう町並みで
知られています。
Its origins, however,
are connected to an epidemic
that spread in 869.
けれども、その始まりには、
869年に広がった疫病が
深く関わっています。
A ritual called Goryoe was held
to pray for the end of the epidemic
and peace across the land.
疫病が鎮まることを願い、
「御霊会」と呼ばれる祭礼が
行われました。
Over many centuries,
these prayers developed
into the Gion Festival
we know today.
その祈りは長い年月を経て、
現在の祇園祭へと
受け継がれてきたのです。

Tradition tells of 66 spears
raised during the early ritual,
representing Japan’s provinces
at the time.
初期の御霊会では、
当時の国の数にちなむ66本の矛が
立てられたと伝えられています。
Floats and Sacred Mikoshi｜山鉾と神輿の違い
The festival has two important traditions:
the grand procession of floats
and the procession of sacred mikoshi.
祇園祭には、
華やかな山鉾巡行と、
神輿が町を進む神輿渡御があります。
The floats help purify the streets
as part of the festival rituals.
The mikoshi carry the deities
through the community.
山鉾巡行には町を清める意味があり、
神輿渡御では神様が神輿に乗って
町を巡るとされています。
Though their roles differ,
both express the hopes
and traditions of Kyoto’s people.
それぞれ役割は異なりますが、
どちらにも京都の人々の祈りが
込められています。

Beauty Water｜美しさを願う美容水
Near Utsukushigozensha Shrine,
visitors will find a small spring
known as Beauty Water.
美御前社の前には、
「美容水」と呼ばれる
小さな湧き水があります。
People traditionally place
a few drops on their skin
while praying for beauty.
The water is not for drinking.
少量を肌につけて
美しさを願う習わしがあります。
飲み水ではないので注意しましょう。
Daikoku-sama and the White Rabbit｜大黒様のそばに白兎がいるのはなぜ？
A small white rabbit
rests beside Daikoku-sama.
Why is a rabbit here?
大黒様のそばには、
かわいらしい白兎の姿があります。
なぜ、兎がいるのでしょうか。
The rabbit recalls the legend
of the White Rabbit of Inaba,
who was helped by Okuninushi,
a deity linked to Daikoku-sama.
その由来は、
大国主神に助けられた白兎が登場する
「因幡の白兎」の神話です。
Knowing this story makes
the little statue feel like
a discovery from an old tale.
物語を知ってから眺めると、
小さな像にも古い神話が
息づいているように感じられます。

The White Rabbit of Inaba
appears in the Kojiki,
an early Japanese chronicle.
因幡の白兎の物語は、
古い歴史書『古事記』に
登場します。
The Lantern-Lined Dance Stage｜提灯が並ぶ舞殿
In the center of the grounds
stands the Dance Stage,
surrounded by rows of lanterns.
境内の中央に建つ舞殿には、
たくさんの提灯が
並んでいます。
Ceremonies and traditional offerings
are held here at various times
throughout the year.
ここでは一年を通して、
神事や奉納行事などが
行われています。
The lanterns create
one of the shrine’s most
memorable scenes.
提灯が並ぶ光景は、
八坂神社らしさを感じられる
景色のひとつです。
