川を進む一艘の木舟。
両岸にそびえる岩壁。
渓谷に響く川の音。
The Hozugawa River Boat Ride
takes visitors from Kameoka
to Arashiyama, Kyoto,
along approximately 16 km
of beautiful river scenery.
保津川下りは、
京都・亀岡から嵐山まで、
約16kmの川を下る舟旅です。
But this river was not always
a place for sightseeing.
More than 400 years ago,
boats carried goods
through these mountains.
けれど、この川は昔から
観光のために使われていた
わけではありません。
400年以上前、
この川では荷物を積んだ舟が
山々の間を行き来していました。
Today, skilled boatmen
still guide wooden boats
using poles, oars,
and a large rudder.
現在も船頭さんたちは、
竿や櫂、舵を使いながら
木舟を巧みに操っています。

A River with History｜400年を超える舟運の歴史
The history of river transport
on the Hozugawa
goes back more than 400 years.
In 1606,
the merchant Suminokura Ryoi
developed the river
as a transportation route.
保津川の舟運の歴史は、
400年以上前にさかのぼります。
1606年、
豪商・角倉了以によって
舟運のための川の整備が
進められました。
Timber, rice, firewood,
and other products
from the Tamba region
were transported toward Kyoto.
丹波地方からは、
木材や米、薪などの産物が
京都へと運ばれていました。
The river connected
mountain communities
with the city.
保津川は、
山あいの地域と京都の町を結ぶ
大切な輸送路だったのです。

As railways developed,
river transport gradually declined.
The river later became famous
for sightseeing boat rides.
鉄道の発達とともに、
物資を運ぶ舟運は
次第に役割を終えていきました。

渓谷の自然を楽しむ

親しまれるようになりました。
The purpose of the boats changed.
But the knowledge needed
to navigate the river
continued to be passed down.
舟の役割は変わりました。
けれど、川を進むための知恵と技術は

Three Boatmen, One Boat｜3人で操る一艘の舟
A traditional Hozugawa boat
is guided by three boatmen.
Each has an important role.
保津川下りの木舟は、
3人の船頭さんが
力を合わせて操ります。
それぞれに、
大切な役割があります。
At the front,
one boatman uses a long bamboo pole
to push against rocks
and guide the boat.
舟の前方では、
長い竹竿を岩などに当て、
舟の進む方向を調整します。
Another boatman
uses an oar to propel
and control the boat.
その後ろでは、
櫂を使って舟を漕ぎ、
動きを調整します。
At the back,
the third boatman
controls a large rudder
to steer the boat.
そして舟の後方では、
大きな舵を操り、
舟の方向を定めています。

The Hozugawa River
is not always calm.
Some sections are gentle,
while others have
fast currents and narrow passages.
保津川は、
いつも穏やかな川ではありません。
ゆるやかな流れもあれば、
流れが速く、
川幅が狭くなる場所もあります。
As the boat approaches the rapids,
the boatmen carefully adjust
its direction and speed.
急流に近づくと、
船頭さんたちは
舟の向きや動きを調整しながら
岩の間を進みます。
Water splashes beside the boat.
The current becomes stronger.
And the quiet river journey
suddenly feels very different.
舟のそばで水しぶきが上がり、
川の流れが強くなります。
それまでの穏やかな舟旅とは
違った迫力を感じる瞬間です。

Some rocks along the river
have hollows made by boatmen
pushing their poles
against the same places
over many generations.
保津川には、
船頭さんたちが長年にわたり

Part 2
舟から楽しむ保津峡
Rocks with Stories｜名前を持つ奇岩
Hozu Gorge is filled
with unusual rock formations.
Some resemble animals,
while others have shapes
that invite the imagination.
保津峡には、
さまざまな形をした
個性的な岩があります。
動物のように見える岩や、
見る人の想像を膨らませる岩など、
形もさまざまです。
One interesting example
is a rock known as Lion Rock.
From a certain angle,
its outline resembles
the profile of a lion.
そのひとつが、
ライオン岩と呼ばれる岩です。
見る角度によって、
ライオンの横顔のように
見えるといわれています。

The Train Above｜渓谷を走るトロッコ列車
Another memorable sight
is the Sagano Romantic Train.
The railway follows the gorge,
offering views of the river
from the mountainside.
もうひとつの楽しみが、
嵯峨野トロッコ列車です。
列車は渓谷に沿って走り、
山側から保津川の景色を
楽しむことができます。
From the boat,
you may see the train
passing high above the river.
舟の上からは、
川の上方を走る列車が
見えることもあります。
Sometimes, passengers
on the train and boat
wave to each other.
列車と舟のお客さんが
手を振り合う光景に
出会えることもあります。

Hozu Gorge changes
with every season.
In spring,
cherry blossoms appear
along the mountainsides.
Early summer brings
fresh green leaves.
In autumn,
the mountains turn
shades of red and gold.
Winter brings bare trees,
clear air,
and sometimes snow.
保津峡は、
季節によって
さまざまな表情を見せます。
春は山々を彩る桜。
初夏は鮮やかな新緑。
秋は赤や黄色に染まる紅葉。

The river remains the same,
