Kifune Shrine is an ancient shrine
in the mountains of northern Kyoto,
dedicated to a deity of water and rain.
貴船神社は、
京都の北の山あいにある古い神社。
水や雨を司る神様を祀っています。
But why has water been
so important to this shrine
for so many centuries?
なぜ、この神社では
古くから水が大切に
されてきたのでしょうか。

Deity of Water｜なぜ水の神様を祀るの？
Kifune Shrine is dedicated to
Takaokami-no-Kami,
a deity associated with water and rain.
貴船神社には、
水や雨を司る神様、
高龗神（たかおかみのかみ）が
祀られています。
For centuries,
people have prayed here
for rain during droughts
and for rain to stop during floods.
古くから、
日照りのときには雨を願い、
長雨のときには雨が止むよう
祈りが捧げられてきました。
Water was essential
for farming and daily life.
The shrine became an important place
for prayers connected with water.
水は農作物を育て、
人々の暮らしを支える大切なもの。
貴船神社は、水への祈りを捧げる
重要な場所となったのです。
■ Memo｜雨を願う馬の奉納
According to tradition,
black horses were offered
when praying for rain,
while white horses were offered
when praying for clear weather.
伝承によると、
雨を願うときには黒い馬、
晴れを願うときには白い馬が
奉納されたといわれています。
This custom is also connected
with the history of ema,
the wooden prayer plaques
seen at Japanese shrines today.
この習わしは、
現在の神社で見られる
「絵馬」の歴史とも
深く関わっています。
The Legend of Okumiya｜奥宮に残る船の伝説
Deep in the mountains
stands Okumiya,
the site where Kifune Shrine
is traditionally believed
to have first been established.
山の奥にある奥宮は、
貴船神社が最初に祀られた場所と
伝えられています。
An old legend tells of
Princess Tamayori,
who traveled upstream by boat
in search of a sacred place.
古い伝説では、
玉依姫命（たまよりひめのみこと）が
船に乗って川をさかのぼり、
神聖な場所を探したといわれています。
When she reached this area,
she is said to have enshrined
the deity of water.
そして、この地にたどり着き、
水の神様を祀ったと伝わります。
A stone-covered mound
called Funagata-ishi
is traditionally associated
with the boat in this legend.
奥宮には、
「船形石（ふながたいし）」と呼ばれる
石を積んだ場所があります。
伝説の船を隠した場所と
いわれています。

Okumiya is considered
the shrine’s original sacred site.
The Main Shrine was later moved
to its present location.
奥宮は、かつて本宮があった

The Main Shrine is famous
for its stone staircase
lined with red lanterns.
本宮を代表する景色は、
赤い灯籠が並ぶ石段です。
Here, visitors can also try
a special kind of fortune-telling
called Mizuura Mikuji.
ここでは、
「水占みくじ」という
少し珍しいおみくじも楽しめます。
At first, the paper appears blank.
But when placed on water,
the fortune gradually appears.
最初は何も書かれていない紙。
水に浮かべると、
少しずつ文字が現れます。

According to tradition,
the Heian-period poet
Izumi Shikibu visited this shrine
to pray for her relationship
with her husband.
平安時代の歌人・和泉式部が、
夫との仲を願って
参拝したと伝えられています。
Today, visitors pray here
for love, relationships
and meaningful connections.
現在も恋愛だけでなく、
人とのつながりや
さまざまなご縁を願う人々が
訪れています。
Okumiya｜森の奥に残る静けさ
Continuing deeper into the mountains,
visitors reach Okumiya,
surrounded by tall trees
and a peaceful forest.
さらに山の奥へ進むと、
大きな木々に囲まれた
奥宮にたどり着きます。
This is the place connected
with the ancient boat legend
introduced earlier.
ここは、先ほど紹介した
船の伝説が残る場所です。

surrounded by cool mountain air.
川のすぐ上に設けられた床で、
