京都・天橋立｜飛龍観と昇龍観、二つの龍に見える不思議な絶景

Introduction｜はじめに

A narrow sandbar stretching across the sea.
Thousands of pine trees.
And a landscape said to resemble a dragon.

海の上にのびる細長い砂州。
約6,700本の松並木。
そして、龍にたとえられる不思議な景色。

Amanohashidate, located in northern Kyoto,
is one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views.
Its pine-covered sandbar stretches about
3.6 kilometers across Miyazu Bay.

天橋立は、京都府北部にある日本三景のひとつです。
宮津湾にのびる全長約3.6kmの砂州には、
たくさんの松が生い茂っています。

From the south,
it is called the Flying Dragon View.
From the north,
it becomes the Rising Dragon View.
But why does the same landscape resemble
two different dragons?

南から見れば「飛龍観」。
北から見れば「昇龍観」。
けれど、なぜ同じ天橋立が、
二つの異なる龍の姿に見えるのでしょうか。

Hiryukan｜空を飛ぶ龍

Start at Amanohashidate View Land on the
southern side.
From the viewpoint, the long sandbar
stretches between the blue waters
of Miyazu Bay.

まずは南側にある天橋立ビューランドへ。
展望台から眺めると、
青い海の間を細長い砂州がのびています。

This view is known as Hiryukan, or the
“Flying Dragon View.”
The shape of the sandbar is said to
resemble a dragon flying through the sky.

この景観は「飛龍観」と呼ばれています。
砂州の形が、
空を飛ぶ龍の姿に見えることから名付けられました。

Shoryukan｜空へ昇る龍

Now look at Amanohashidate from the
opposite direction.
Kasamatsu Park, on the northern side,
offers another famous view.

今度は天橋立の反対側へ。
北側にある傘松公園からは、
また違った景色を楽しめます。

From here, the sandbar is said to resemble
a dragon rising toward the sky.
This view is called Shoryukan, or the
“Rising Dragon View.”

こちらから見る天橋立は、
龍が空へ昇っていくように見えることから、
「昇龍観」と呼ばれています。

The sandbar itself has not changed.
Only the direction has.
Yet the dragon seems
to take on a different form.

砂州そのものは変わっていません。
変わったのは、眺める方向だけ。
それなのに、龍の姿まで違って見えるのです。

Matanozoki｜逆さまに見ると？

There is another unusual way to enjoy
Amanohashidate.
Turn your back to the scenery, bend
forward, and look between your legs.
This is called Matanozoki.

天橋立には、
もうひとつ不思議な楽しみ方があります。
景色に背を向け、
前にかがんで足の間からのぞく「股のぞき」です。

When viewed upside down, the sea and sky
appear to change places.
The sandbar seems to float
like a bridge in the heavens.

逆さまに眺めると、
空と海が入れ替わったように見えます。
海の上にあった砂州が、まるで天に浮かぶ橋のよう。

The landscape is the same.
But changing how you look at it creates an
entirely different impression.

景色は同じ。
けれど、見方を変えるだけで、
まったく違う世界が広がります。

Walking Among the Pines｜松並木の中へ

From the viewpoints, Amanohashidate looks
like one long line across the sea.
But beneath the pine trees, the scenery
feels completely different.

展望台から見た天橋立は、海の上にのびる一本の線。
けれど、松並木の中に入ると、
景色は大きく変わります。

Pine trees line the path, and the sea
appears through the branches.
You can feel the breeze and hear the waves
nearby.

道の両側には松が並び、木々の間から海が見えます。
海から吹く風や、すぐ近くで聞こえる波の音。

The landscape you admired from above
becomes a place you can walk through.

遠くから眺めていた景色が、
今度は自分の歩く道になるのです。

Kaisenkyo Bridge｜90度回る不思議な橋

Near the southern entrance stands
Kaisenkyo, an unusual rotating bridge.
When boats need to pass, the bridge turns
90 degrees to open the waterway.

天橋立の南側入口近くには、
珍しい回転式の橋「廻旋橋」があります。
船が通るときには、
橋が90度回転して通り道をつくります。

A bridge that moves instead of staying
still.
If you are lucky, you may see it rotating
during your visit.

普段は人が渡る橋なのに、船が来ると動き始める。
タイミングが合えば、
橋が回転する様子を見られるかもしれません。

Isoshimizu｜海の中に湧く真水？

Among the pine trees stands a small shrine
known as Amanohashidate Shrine, or
Hashidate Myojin.
Nearby is a surprising freshwater spring
called Isoshimizu.

松並木の中には、
「橋立明神」とも呼ばれる天橋立神社があります。
そのそばにあるのが、
不思議な湧き水「磯清水」です。

Although the spring is located on a narrow
sandbar surrounded by the sea, its water is
fresh rather than salty.

海に囲まれた細長い砂州の中にありながら、
塩味を含まない真水が湧いています。

This remarkable spring was selected as one
of Japan’s 100 Famous Waters in 1985.

この不思議な湧き水は、
1985年に「名水百選」に選ばれました。

Chionji Temple｜知恵を授けるお寺

Near the southern entrance to
Amanohashidate stands Chionji Temple.
It is known as one of Japan’s Three Monju
temples and is dedicated to Monju Bosatsu,
the bodhisattva of wisdom.

天橋立の南側入口近くには、智恩寺があります。
日本三文殊のひとつとして知られ、
知恵を授けるとされる文殊菩薩が祀られています。

Many visitors come to pray for wisdom and
success in examinations.
The temple’s impressive Sanmon Gate, also
called Ogonkaku, is another sight worth
seeing.

知恵や学業成就を願って、多くの人が訪れます。
「黄金閣」とも呼ばれる立派な山門も、
見どころのひとつです。
