Introduction｜はじめに
Kinkaku-ji is one of Kyoto’s most famous temples.
Its official name is Rokuon-ji.
The golden pavilion shines beautifully across the pond,
but the atmosphere is not only gorgeous.
It also feels calm and carefully composed.
金閣寺は、
京都を代表する有名なお寺のひとつ。
正式名称は、
鹿苑寺（ろくおんじ）です。
金色の建物が池に映る姿はとても華やかですが、
ただ派手というより、
整えられた美しさを感じる場所です🌿

The current Golden Pavilion was rebuilt in 1955.
It became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site
“Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto” in 1994.
現在の金閣は、
1955年に再建されたもの。
1994年には、
「古都京都の文化財」の一部として
世界文化遺産に登録されています。
Golden Pavilion｜舎利殿・金閣
The main building is called Shariden,
though most visitors simply call it the Golden Pavilion.
The second and third floors are covered with gold leaf.
Depending on the weather and light,
the colors change gently throughout the day.
舎利殿（しゃりでん）は、
一般的に「金閣」と呼ばれています。
2階と3階には金箔が使われていて、
光や天気によって、
見え方が少しずつ変わります。
晴れの日は明るく輝き、
曇りの日は少しやわらかい雰囲気に見えることも。

Golden Phoenix｜鳳凰
At the top of the pavilion,
a golden phoenix stands against the sky.
It may look small from far away,
but many visitors remember it after noticing it.
金閣の屋根の上には、
金色の鳳凰（ほうおう）が立っています。
遠くから見ると小さく見えますが、
気づくと意外と印象に残る存在。
鳳凰は、
平和や吉兆の象徴とも言われています。

The current one was recreated later.

Kyōko-chi Pond｜鏡湖池
The pond in front of the pavilion is called Kyōko-chi,
meaning “Mirror Lake Pond.”
The Golden Pavilion feels most complete
when reflected on the water surface.
金閣の前に広がる池は、
鏡湖池（きょうこち）。
「鏡の湖の池」
という名前の通り、
水面に映る金閣の景色がとても印象的です。
建物だけではなく、
池と一緒に見ることで、
金閣寺らしい景色になります🌿

Ryūmon Waterfall｜龍門の滝
Ryūmon Waterfall is connected to the old legend of a carp becoming a dragon
after climbing a waterfall.
It is a small part of the garden,
but it carries symbolic meaning.
龍門の滝は、
滝を登った鯉が龍になるという
「登竜門」の伝説と関係があると言われています。
大きな滝ではありませんが、
意味を知ってから見ると、
少し印象が変わる場所です。

上へ登ろうとする鯉を表しているとも言われています。
Rikushū-no-Matsu Pine Tree｜陸舟の松
Rikushū-no-Matsu is a pine tree shaped like a ship.
It is said to be connected with Ashikaga Yoshimitsu,
who created the original villa here.
陸舟の松は、
船の形に整えられた松です。
金閣寺をつくった足利義満に
ゆかりがあるとも言われています。
金閣の華やかさとは違う、
庭の中の静かな見どころです🌿

Sekka-tei Tea House｜夕佳亭
Sekka-tei is a quiet tea house deeper in the garden.
Its name means
“a place beautiful in the evening light.”
夕佳亭（せっかてい）は、
庭の奥にある静かな茶室です。
名前には、
「夕暮れの光が美しい場所」
という意味があります。
金閣のきらびやかさとは少し違う、
落ち着いた空気があります。

Fudō-dō Hall｜不動堂
Fudō-dō is a small hall dedicated to Fudō Myōō.
Compared with the brilliance of the Golden Pavilion,
this area feels more calm and grounded.
不動堂は、
不動明王を祀るお堂です。
金閣の華やかな景色とは少し違い、
落ち着いた空気を感じる場所。
観光地の中にも、
祈りの場所としての雰囲気が残っています。

Anmintaku Pond & White Snake Mound｜安民沢と白蛇の塚
Anmintaku is a quiet pond located deeper in the grounds.
Nearby,
there is also a mound connected with the white snake,
which is considered a symbol of fortune.
安民沢は、
境内の奥にある静かな池です。
近くには白蛇の塚もあり、
白蛇は弁財天の使いや、
縁起の良い存在として知られることがあります。
華やかな金閣を見たあとに、
少し落ち着いた余韻を感じる場所です🌿
