Introduction｜はじめに
Tenryu-ji
is one of Kyoto’s
most important Zen temples
and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Founded in 1339,
it is the head temple
of the Tenryu branch
of the Rinzai school
of Zen Buddhism.
The temple
is best known
for its beautiful
Sogenchi Garden,
which still preserves
the character
of its original design
from nearly 700 years ago.
天龍寺は、

Kuri｜庫裏
The Kuri
serves as an entrance
to the temple halls
and is one of
Tenryu-ji’s
most recognizable buildings.
Its large gabled roof
and simple wooden architecture
reflect
the quiet beauty
of a Zen temple.
Entering through the Kuri,
visitors begin
their walk
through one of Kyoto’s
most historic temples.

諸堂参拝の入口となる建物で、
天龍寺を象徴する

大きな切妻屋根と、
落ち着いた木造建築が、
禅寺らしい

History｜歴史
Tenryu-ji
was founded in 1339
by Ashikaga Takauji,
with the Zen master
Muso Soseki
as its founding abbot.
The temple
was built
to honor
Emperor Go-Daigo
after his death.
The temple’s
famous Sogenchi Garden
was also designed
by Muso Soseki.
Although
the temple buildings
have been rebuilt
after several fires,
the garden
has remained
largely unchanged
since the 14th century.
天龍寺は、

足利尊氏を開基、
夢窓疎石を開山として
創建されました。
後醍醐天皇の
冥福を祈るために
建立された寺院です。
曹源池庭園も、
夢窓疎石によって
作庭されました。
建物は
たび重なる火災によって
再建されましたが、

Sogenchi Garden
is the heart
of Tenryu-ji
and its most famous attraction.
The garden
still preserves
much of
its original design
from nearly 700 years ago.
The pond,
stone arrangements,
and surrounding mountains
create
a peaceful landscape
that reflects
the spirit of Zen.
It was the first garden
in Japan
to be designated
both a Historic Site
and a Special Place
of Scenic Beauty.

作庭当時の面影を
今も色濃く
残しています。
池や石組、
そして周囲の山々が

This traditional technique
is called
“shakkei,”
or borrowed scenery.
At the center
of the view
from the Daihojo,
a stone arrangement
known as Ryumon-baku
represents
the Chinese legend
of a carp
climbing a waterfall
and becoming a dragon.
庭園の奥に見える嵐山や、
西側に位置する亀山も、
庭園の景色の一部として
取り入れられています。
この手法は、
「借景（しゃっけい）」と
呼ばれています。

曹源池を正面に見ると、
「龍門瀑」と呼ばれる
石組があります。
滝を登った鯉が
龍になるという
中国の故事

is one of
the main buildings
at Tenryu-ji.
Its ceiling

Cloud Dragon painting,
one of the temple’s
best-known works of art.
The dragon
is designed
to appear
as though
it is watching
visitors
from every direction.

天井には、
有名な
「雲龍図」が描かれ、
天龍寺を代表する
見どころとして
親しまれています。
どこから見ても
龍と目が合うように
感じられることから、
「八方睨みの龍」とも
呼ばれています。

The current Cloud Dragon painting
was created in 1997
by Japanese artist
Kayama Matazo.
Outside the special
spring and autumn
viewing periods,
it is generally open
on Saturdays,
Sundays,
and public holidays.
Opening dates
may change
because of temple events,

the temple grounds,

wooded paths,

From the north gate,
the path
continues directly
to the famous
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
Many visitors
enjoy exploring
both places
during the same walk.

そのまま歩いて
向かうことができます。

そのまま竹林まで
