庭園の向こうに広がる山々。
Tenryu-ji Temple stands
in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
Founded in 1339,
this Zen temple is part of
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
天龍寺は、
京都・嵐山に建つ禅寺です。
1339年に創建され、
世界文化遺産にも
登録されています。
Its famous Sogenchi Garden
still preserves the character
of its nearly 700-year-old design.
But look a little closer.
The garden holds a story of a dragon,
and a view that reaches
beyond its boundaries.
有名な曹源池庭園には、
約700年前の作庭の面影が
今も残されています。
けれど、少しよく見ると、
そこには龍の物語や、
庭園の外まで広がる
景色の工夫が隠されています。
時を超えて残る庭園の物語
A Garden Through Time｜約700年前の庭園
Tenryu-ji was founded in 1339
by Ashikaga Takauji,
with the Zen master Muso Soseki
as its founding abbot.
The temple was established
to honor Emperor Go-Daigo
after his death.
天龍寺は1339年、
足利尊氏を開基、
夢窓疎石を開山として
創建されました。
後醍醐天皇の菩提を
弔うために建てられたお寺です。
Over the centuries,
fires destroyed many
of the temple buildings.
The buildings we see today
were largely rebuilt
in later times.
Yet Sogenchi Garden,
created under Muso Soseki,
still preserves much
of its medieval character.
その後、天龍寺は
何度も火災に見舞われ、
多くの建物が失われました。
現在の諸堂の多くは、
後の時代に再建されたものです。
一方、夢窓疎石が手がけた
曹源池庭園には、
中世の庭園の面影が

Sogenchi Garden was one of
the first gardens in Japan
to be designated
both a Historic Site
and a Place of Scenic Beauty.
It was later designated
a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
曹源池庭園は、
日本で最初に史跡・名勝に
指定された庭園のひとつです。
その後、特別名勝にも
指定されました。
Not every stone and shoreline
has remained unchanged.
Still, the pond and landscape
offer a glimpse of a garden
created centuries ago.
すべてが作庭当時のまま
残っているわけではありません。
それでも、池や石組の景色から、
何百年も前の庭園の姿を
感じることができます。
The Dragon Gate Waterfall｜石組に隠された龍の物語
Look toward the stones
at the far side of the pond.
Among them is an arrangement
known as Ryumon-baku,
the Dragon Gate Waterfall.
池の奥にある石組に
目を向けてみましょう。
そこには、
「龍門瀑（りゅうもんばく）」
と呼ばれる石組があります。
The arrangement represents
a waterfall from an old
Chinese legend.
In the story, a carp climbs
a powerful waterfall
and transforms into a dragon.
これは、中国に伝わる
「登龍門」の故事を
表現したものです。
激しい滝を登りきった鯉が、
龍になるという物語です。

The garden’s carp stone
is placed beside
the imagined waterfall.
It is said to represent
the carp in the process
of becoming a dragon.
龍門瀑の鯉魚石は、
滝を表す石組の横に
配置されています。
鯉が龍へと変わる途中の姿を
表しているとされています。
At first, we saw only stones
beside a pond.
Now those same stones
hold an ancient story.
最初は、池のほとりにある
石組に見えました。
けれど、その意味を知ると、
同じ石にも古い物語が
重なって見えてきます。

Borrowed Scenery｜庭園はどこまで続く？
Now lift your eyes
beyond the pond.
Behind the garden,
the mountains of Arashiyama
and Kameyama become
part of the view.
今度は、池の向こうへ
視線を向けてみましょう。
庭園の奥には、
嵐山や亀山の山々が
広がっています。
This technique is called
shakkei, or borrowed scenery.
Instead of limiting the view
to the garden itself,
the surrounding landscape
becomes part of its design.
これは「借景（しゃっけい）」
と呼ばれる庭園の手法です。
庭園の中だけでなく、
外にある自然の景色も
庭園の一部として
取り入れています。

Yet from here,
they appear together
as one landscape.

A Walk Beyond the Pond｜庭園の奥へ歩いてみる
After enjoying the pond,
continue through the garden.
The paths lead past trees
and seasonal plants
toward Hyakka-en Garden.
曹源池庭園を楽しんだあとは、
境内をもう少し歩いてみましょう。
木々や季節の植物を眺めながら、
百花苑の方へ進むことができます。
From the north gate,
visitors can continue
toward the famous
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
The garden walk becomes
part of a wider journey
through Sagano.
北門からは、
有名な竹林の小径へ
向かうこともできます。
庭園の散策から、
嵯峨野の自然を楽しむ
次の散歩へとつながります。
