Introduction｜はじめに
A dark wooden torii gate.
A traditional brushwood fence.
Tall bamboo rising behind them.
黒い木の鳥居。
昔ながらの小柴垣。
その向こうに伸びる竹林。
Nonomiya Shrine stands beside the famous
Bamboo Grove in Sagano, Kyoto.
京都・嵯峨野の竹林のそばに、
野宮神社はあります。
Many shrines have
bright vermilion torii gates.
But here, the gate is dark
and still covered in natural bark.
神社の鳥居といえば、
朱色を思い浮かべるかもしれません。
けれど、ここにあるのは、
木の皮を残した黒い鳥居です。
Why does Nonomiya Shrine have such
an unusual gate?
Let us begin here and discover the stories
hidden in this small shrine.
なぜ、野宮神社には
このような鳥居があるのでしょう。
この鳥居を入口に、
小さな神社に残る物語をたどってみましょう。
Part 1
Kuroki Torii｜なぜ黒い鳥居なの？
Look closely at the torii gate standing
at the entrance.
入口に立つ鳥居を、少し近くから見てみましょう。
Its dark appearance
does not come from black paint.
The gate is made from kunugi oak,
with the natural bark left on the wood.
黒く見えるのは、
黒い塗料を塗っているからではありません。
クヌギの木の樹皮を
そのまま残して
造られているためです。
This style is known as Kuroki Torii.
It is considered one of the oldest forms
of torii gates in Japan.
このような鳥居は「黒木鳥居」と呼ばれます。
日本の鳥居の中でも、
古い形式のひとつといわれています。
Against the green bamboo, the dark gate
creates a distinctive view.
It is a small entrance,
but one with a long history behind it.
竹林の緑を背景に、
黒い鳥居が静かに立っています。
小さな入口ですが、
その向こうには長い歴史が続いています。
Koshibagaki Fence｜鳥居の隣にある小柴垣
Beside the Kuroki Torii,
notice the simple fence
made from branches.
黒木鳥居の隣にある、
枝を組んだ垣根にも目を向けてみましょう。
This is called Koshibagaki,
a traditional brushwood fence
made from kuromoji branches.
Together with the torii, it preserves
the appearance of the old Nonomiya.
これは、クロモジの枝を使った「小柴垣」です。
黒木鳥居とともに、
昔の野宮の風情を今に伝えています。
The Saio Tradition｜斎王が過ごした場所
Why were these old traditions preserved
at Nonomiya Shrine?
The answer is connected to the Saio,
women of the Imperial Family
chosen to serve at Ise Grand Shrine.
なぜ野宮神社には、
このような古い形式が残されているのでしょう。
その背景には「斎王（さいおう）」の歴史があります。
斎王とは、伊勢神宮に仕えるために
皇族の女性から選ばれた人です。
Before leaving for Ise,
a Saio spent time purifying herself
at a sacred place called Nonomiya.
斎王は伊勢へ向かう前に、
「野宮」と呼ばれる場所で身を清めていました。
Nonomiya was traditionally established
in a pure place, and its location could
change from one Saio to another.
The present shrine preserves the memory
of this ancient custom.
野宮は清らかな場所に設けられ、
斎王が替わると場所も変わることがありました。
現在の野宮神社には、
その古い習わしの記憶が受け継がれています。
The Tale of Genji｜源氏物語に描かれた野宮
Nonomiya also appears in The Tale of Genji,
written by Murasaki Shikibu during
the Heian period.
野宮は、
平安時代に紫式部が書いた『源氏物語』にも登場します。
In the chapter “Sakaki,”
Hikaru Genji visits Lady Rokujo,
who is staying at Nonomiya
with her daughter, the future Saio.
「賢木（さかき）」の巻では、
光源氏が、斎王となる娘に付き添って
野宮に滞在する六条御息所を
訪ねる場面が描かれています。
Their meeting is filled with complicated
feelings and the sadness of parting.
The story describes the atmosphere
of Nonomiya, including its brushwood fence.
二人の再会には、
複雑な思いと別れの寂しさが重なります。
物語には、小柴垣など、
野宮の風景も描かれています。
The torii and fence we see today are not
the original ones from the Heian period.
Yet their traditional forms help us imagine
the atmosphere described long ago.
今見られる鳥居や垣根が、
平安時代からそのまま
残っているわけではありません。
それでも、受け継がれてきた古い形式から、
物語に描かれた風景を少し想像することができます。

Part 2
Kameishi｜願いを込める亀石
Near Nonomiya Daikokuten is a sacred stone
called Kameishi, or the Turtle Stone.
野宮大黒天のそばには、
「亀石」と呼ばれる神石があります。
According to tradition,
a wish may come true within one year
if you gently stroke the stone
while praying.
願いを込めながらやさしく撫でると、
一年以内に願いが叶うと伝えられています。
Nonomiya Shrine is also known as a place
to pray for good relationships.
野宮神社は、
良縁を願う場所としても親しまれています。
Carpet Moss Garden｜緑のじゅうたん苔
Another quiet feature of the shrine
is its moss garden, known as Jutan-goke,
or Carpet Moss.
境内には、
「じゅうたん苔」と呼ばれる苔庭もあります。
Soft green moss covers the garden, creating
a peaceful scene among the trees.
やわらかな緑の苔が広がり、
木々とともに落ち着いた景色をつくっています。
After rain, the green
may appear even more vivid.
It is a different kind of beauty
from the dark wooden torii.
雨上がりには、
緑がいっそう鮮やかに見えることもあります。
黒木鳥居とはまた違った、
自然の美しさを感じられる場所です。
Outside the shrine, the bamboo grove
continues along the path.
After exploring the stories of Nonomiya,
take a moment to enjoy the scenery
of Sagano.
神社を出ると、
周囲には竹林の風景が続いています。
野宮に残る物語を思い浮かべながら、
嵯峨野の道を歩いてみるのも
よいかもしれません。
