Introduction｜はじめに
Tō-ji is one of Kyoto’s most important historic temples.
Located about a 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station,
the temple is known for its five-storied pagoda,
Buddhist halls,
and deep connection with Kōbō Daishi Kūkai.
Rising approximately 55 meters above the temple grounds,
the pagoda has become one of Kyoto’s most recognizable landmarks.
東寺は、
京都を代表する歴史あるお寺のひとつです。
京都駅から徒歩約15分の場所にあり、
五重塔や歴史的なお堂、
弘法大師・空海との深いつながりで知られています。

Tō-ji was founded in 796,
shortly after the capital was moved to Heian-kyō.
It was established as one of two major temples
built near the southern entrance to the new capital.

In 823,
Emperor Saga entrusted Tō-ji to Kūkai,
the Buddhist monk later known as Kōbō Daishi.

Nandaimon Gate｜南大門
Nandaimon Gate stands
on the southern side of the temple grounds.
Its large wooden structure
creates an impressive entrance to Tō-ji.
南大門（なんだいもん）は、
東寺の境内南側に建つ大きな門です。

東寺の入口らしい
堂々とした雰囲気をつくっています。
After passing through the gate,
the five-storied pagoda
gradually comes into view.
Leaving the busy road behind,
visitors enter the spacious and quiet temple grounds.

少しずつ五重塔が見えてきます。
にぎやかな道路から離れ、
広く静かな境内へと
入っていきます。

Five-Storied Pagoda｜五重塔
The five-storied pagoda
is the symbol of Tō-ji.
Standing approximately 55 meters tall,
it is the tallest existing wooden five-storied pagoda in Japan.
五重塔は、
東寺を象徴する建物です。
高さは約55メートルあり、
現存する木造五重塔としては
日本で最も高い塔です。
The pagoda was destroyed by fire
several times throughout its long history
and was rebuilt each time.
The present pagoda was completed in 1644
with the support of Tokugawa Iemitsu,
the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate.
五重塔は長い歴史の中で、
火災による焼失と再建を
繰り返してきました。
現在の塔は、
江戸幕府三代将軍・徳川家光の寄進によって
1644年に再建されたものです。
Inside the first story,
Buddhist figures are arranged
around the central pillar,
known as the shinbashira.
This sacred interior can normally be seen
only during limited special openings.

「心柱（しんばしら）」を中心に、
仏像や仏画によって
密教の世界が表されています。
内部を拝観できるのは、
基本的に期間限定の
特別公開時のみです。

Kondō Hall｜国宝・金堂
Kondō Hall is the main hall of Tō-ji.
The original building was destroyed by fire,
and the present hall was completed in 1603
with the support of Toyotomi Hideyori.
金堂（こんどう）は、
東寺の中心となる本堂です。
創建当時の建物は火災で失われ、
現在の金堂は、
豊臣秀頼の寄進によって
1603年に再建されました。
Inside the hall,
Yakushi Nyorai,
the Buddha of healing,
is accompanied by Nikkō Bosatsu and Gakkō Bosatsu.
Twelve guardian figures,
known as the Twelve Divine Generals,
are arranged around the pedestal.

日光菩薩（にっこうぼさつ）と
月光菩薩（がっこうぼさつ）が

The large wooden building
and quiet Buddhist statues

Rather than moving quickly through the hall,
take a moment to observe
the statues and the surrounding space.

Kōdō Hall｜講堂
Kōdō Hall stands
near the center of the temple grounds.
Kūkai planned the hall
as an important place
for expressing the teachings of Esoteric Buddhism.
講堂（こうどう）は、
東寺の境内中央部に建つお堂です。
空海はこの講堂を、
密教の教えを表す
重要な場所として構想しました。
Inside,
21 Buddhist statues are arranged
around Dainichi Nyorai.
Together,
the statues express the world of a mandala
in three-dimensional form.
内部には、
大日如来（だいにちにょらい）を中心に、
21体の仏像が配置されています。
これらの仏像によって、
曼荼羅の世界が
立体的に表現されています。
This arrangement is commonly known
as the three-dimensional mandala,
or “Rittai Mandala.”
Rather than viewing each statue separately,
visitors can experience the entire hall
as one sacred Buddhist world.
この仏像群は、
「立体曼荼羅（りったいまんだら）」と
呼ばれています。
一体ずつ仏像を見るだけではなく、
お堂全体で表された
密教の世界を感じられる場所です。

Mieidō Hall｜国宝・御影堂
Mieidō Hall,
also known as Daishidō,
stands in the northwestern part
of the temple grounds.
The hall is said to stand
on the site where Kūkai lived
while directing the construction of Tō-ji.
御影堂（みえいどう）は、
大師堂とも呼ばれ、
境内の北西側にあります。
空海が東寺の造営を進めていたころ、
住房として暮らしていた場所に建つと
伝えられています。
A seated statue of Kōbō Daishi
is enshrined here.
Every morning,
food and tea are offered to Kūkai
during a ritual known as Shōjinku.
御影堂には、
弘法大師坐像が安置されています。
現在も毎朝、
空海に食事とお茶を供える
「生身供（しょうじんく）」が
行われています。
Mieidō is not only a valuable historic building.
It remains an important place of prayer
and one of the best places
to experience the living religious traditions of Tō-ji.

In autumn,
the trees around the pagoda and pond

may be held during the cherry blossom

seasonal trees,
