Tō-ji Temple｜東寺
Tō-ji is one of Kyoto’s most famous temples,
located not far from Kyoto Station.
The five-storied pagoda rises quietly above the city,
and has become one of Kyoto’s symbolic landscapes.
東寺は、
京都駅の近くにある有名なお寺。
高くそびえる五重塔は、
京都を代表する景色のひとつとして知られています。
華やかというより、
静かに空へ伸びていくような空気を感じる場所です🌿

Tō-ji was founded in 796,
shortly after the capital moved to Heian-kyō.
In 1994,
it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site
“Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”
東寺は、
平安京への遷都後まもない796年に建てられました。
1994年には、
「古都京都の文化財」の一部として
世界文化遺産に登録されています。
Nandaimon Gate｜南大門
The Southern Gate is one of the main entrances to Tō-ji.
Passing through the large wooden gate,
the atmosphere slowly changes.
東寺の入口のひとつが、
南大門（なんだいもん）。
大きな門をくぐると、
少しずつ空気が静かになっていきます。
門をひとつ越えるたびに、
外の世界から、
内側へ入っていくような感覚があります。

Five-Storied Pagoda｜五重塔
The five-storied pagoda is the symbol of Tō-ji.
At approximately 55 meters tall,
it is the tallest wooden five-storied pagoda in Japan.
東寺のシンボルとも言われる五重塔。
高さは約55メートルあり、
日本で最も高い木造五重塔として知られています。
何度も火災で焼失しながら、
そのたびに再建されてきました。
今の塔は、
1644年に再建されたものです。

Inside the pagoda,
Buddhist statues are arranged around a central pillar called the shinbashira（心柱）.
塔の内部には、
「心柱（しんばしら）」を中心に仏像が配置されています。

During cherry blossom season and autumn illuminations,
the pagoda reflection becomes especially beautiful.
夜のライトアップでは、
水面に映る五重塔がとても幻想的。
塔だけではなく、
水面の反射も一緒になって、
静かな景色を作っています。
京都らしい夜景として、
印象に残る人も多いみたいです🌙

Kondō Hall｜金堂
The Kondō is the main hall of Tō-ji.
Yakushi Nyorai,
the Buddha of healing,
is enshrined here.
金堂（こんどう）は、
東寺の中心となるお堂。
薬師如来（やくしにょらい）が祀られています。
五重塔が空へ伸びる象徴だとすると、
金堂は、
静かに祈りが集まる場所のような空気があります。

Kōdō Hall｜講堂
Inside the Kōdō,
21 Buddhist statues are arranged around Dainichi Nyorai.
This arrangement is known as a three-dimensional mandala.
講堂（こうどう）には、
大日如来を中心に、
21体の仏像が配置されています。
これは、
「立体曼荼羅（りったいまんだら）」
とも呼ばれています。
仏像を「見る」というより、
空間そのものに包まれるような感覚になる場所です。

Mieidō Hall｜御影堂
Mieidō is dedicated to Kōbō Daishi,
also known as Kūkai.
御影堂（みえいどう）は、
弘法大師・空海を祀るお堂です。
東寺は、
観光地として有名ですが、
今でも祈りの場所として大切にされています。
派手さではなく、
静かな信仰の空気を感じる場所です🌿
