Introduction｜はじめに
A five-storied pagoda rising into the Kyoto sky.
Historic wooden halls and quiet temple grounds.
A place where the teachings of Kūkai live on.
京都の空にそびえる五重塔。
歴史ある木造のお堂と静かな境内。
空海の教えが今も息づく場所です。
Tō-ji was founded in 796,
shortly after the capital moved to Heian-kyō.
In 823, the temple was entrusted to Kūkai,
who developed it into a center
of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
東寺は、平安京への遷都後まもない
796年に創建されました。
823年には空海に託され、
真言密教の重要な拠点となりました。
But why is the pagoda so tall?
And what Buddhist world did Kūkai
create inside the temple halls?
では、なぜ五重塔は
これほど高く造られたのでしょうか。
そして、空海はお堂の中に
どんな仏教の世界を表したのでしょうか。

Why Is the Pagoda So Tall?｜なぜ五重塔はこんなに高いの？
Standing approximately 55 meters tall,
Tō-ji’s pagoda is the tallest existing
wooden five-storied pagoda in Japan.
高さ約55メートルの東寺の五重塔。
現存する木造五重塔としては、
日本で最も高い塔です。
The pagoda was planned during Kūkai’s time
as an important structure
representing the teachings
of Esoteric Buddhism.
五重塔は空海の時代に計画され、
密教の教えを表す
大切な建物として造営が進められました。
Its towering form makes it
a landmark visible from afar.
But the pagoda is not simply
a tall building for visitors to climb.
It is a sacred Buddhist structure.
遠くからも見えるその姿は、
京都の象徴となっています。
けれど五重塔は、
高い場所へ登るための建物ではなく、
仏教の信仰を表す塔なのです。
The pagoda was destroyed by fire
several times over the centuries.
The present structure was rebuilt in 1644
with the support of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
長い歴史の中で、
五重塔は何度も火災に遭いました。
現在の塔は1644年、
徳川家光の寄進によって再建されたものです。
■ Memo｜五重塔は登るための建物？
Although the pagoda has five exterior levels,
it does not have five ordinary floors
that visitors can climb.
Its purpose is religious,
rather than providing a view from above.
五重塔は外から見ると五層ですが、
一般の建物のように
五階まで登れる構造ではありません。
展望のためではなく、
信仰のために造られた建物です。
The Sacred Central Pillar｜塔の中心にある心柱
Inside the pagoda stands
a large central pillar
called the shinbashira.
五重塔の内部には、
「心柱（しんばしら）」と呼ばれる
大きな柱があります。
In the first story,
Buddhist statues are arranged
around this central pillar,
creating a sacred space
that expresses the Buddhist world.
初層では、この心柱を中心に
仏像が配置され、
仏教の世界を表す
神聖な空間がつくられています。
The interior is usually closed
to the public,
but special openings may be held
during certain periods.
内部は通常非公開ですが、
期間限定で特別公開されることがあります。
But Kūkai created another remarkable world
inside the Lecture Hall.
では、空海が講堂の中に表した
もう一つの世界とは、
どのようなものなのでしょうか。
The Three-Dimensional Mandala｜21体の仏像がつくる立体曼荼羅
Inside Kōdō Hall,
21 Buddhist statues are arranged
around Dainichi Nyorai,
the central Buddha of Esoteric Buddhism.
講堂の内部には、
密教の中心となる大日如来を中心に、
21体の仏像が配置されています。
Kūkai designed this arrangement
to express the teachings
of Esoteric Buddhism
through three-dimensional figures.
空海は密教の教えを、
立体的な仏像の配置によって
表そうとしました。
This is known as the
three-dimensional mandala,
or Rittai Mandala.
これが「立体曼荼羅（りったいまんだら）」
と呼ばれるものです。
Instead of looking at each statue separately,
visitors can observe how the figures
form one connected Buddhist world.
一体ずつ仏像を見るだけでなく、
それぞれの配置にも注目すると、
お堂全体で一つの世界が
表されていることに気づきます。

A mandala is a symbolic representation
of the Buddhist world
and its teachings.
It is often expressed through paintings,
but at Tō-ji, the mandala takes
a three-dimensional form.
曼荼羅とは、
仏教の世界や教えを
象徴的に表したものです。
絵で描かれることも多い曼荼羅を、
東寺では仏像によって
立体的に表現しています。
A Daily Offering to Kūkai｜今も続く空海への食事
In the northwestern part
of the temple grounds stands Mieidō,
also known as Daishidō.
境内の北西側には、
御影堂（みえいどう）があります。
大師堂とも呼ばれるお堂です。
This hall stands on the site
where Kūkai is said to have lived
while working at Tō-ji.
ここは、空海が東寺で活動していたころ、
暮らしていた場所と伝えられています。
Even today,
food and tea are offered
to Kūkai every morning
in a ritual called Shōjinku.
現在も毎朝、
空海に食事とお茶を供える
「生身供（しょうじんく）」が
行われています。
Nearly 1,200 years after Kūkai’s time,
the tradition of prayer continues.
Tō-ji is not only a place
where history is preserved,
but also a temple where faith remains alive.
空海の時代から約1200年。
今も祈りが続いていることに、
東寺の長い歴史を感じます。
東寺は歴史を残すだけでなく、
信仰が今も息づいているお寺なのです。
今も毎朝、ごはんをお供えしてるのかにゃ！
