Introduction｜はじめに
A long bridge crosses the river
in Arashiyama,
with green mountains rising behind it.
This is Togetsukyo,
one of Kyoto’s most familiar views.
But why is it named after the moon?
And is the bridge we see today
the same one people crossed long ago?
Let’s follow a few small questions,
then look at the scenery again.
京都・嵐山。
山々を背景に、
川を横切る長い橋があります。
京都を代表する風景のひとつ、
渡月橋です。
でも、
どうして月の名前がついているのでしょう。
そして、今の橋は、
昔の人々が渡った橋と同じなのでしょうか。
小さな疑問をたどりながら、もう一度、
景色を眺めてみましょう。
A Bridge Named After the Moon｜月から生まれた名前
Togetsukyo means
“Moon-Crossing Bridge.”
According to tradition,
the retired Emperor Kameyama
saw the moon appear
to cross the bridge.
That beautiful image
is said to have inspired its name.
Even under the daytime sun,
the bridge carries a story about the moon.
渡月橋は、
文字どおり「月が渡る橋」という名前です。
亀山上皇が、
月が橋の上を渡っていくように見えたことから
名づけられたと伝わります。
昼間の橋にも、
月にまつわる物語が隠れているのですね。
The Bridge Through Time｜昔の橋と今の橋
The history of a bridge in this area
is said to go back to the ninth century.
The first bridge is traditionally linked
to the monk Dōshō.
It stood farther upstream.
The crossing was later moved
to its present area,
and the bridge has been rebuilt
many times.
この辺りの橋の歴史は、
9世紀にさかのぼると伝えられています。
最初の橋は僧・道昌にゆかりがあり、
現在より上流にあったとされています。
その後、
橋は現在の辺りへ移され、
幾度も架け替えられてきました。

A Wooden Bridge?｜木の橋に見えるけれど
From a distance, Togetsukyo looks like
an old wooden bridge.
But its main structure
is reinforced concrete,
while the railings are made of wood.
Traditional scenery
and modern engineering
meet in one bridge.
遠くから見ると、
昔ながらの木橋のような渡月橋。
けれど、
橋の主な構造は鉄筋コンクリートで、
欄干には木材が使われています。
昔ながらの景観と、
現代の技術が組み合わされているのです。

look at the supports beneath the bridge.
The view reveals a side of the bridge
that is easy to miss from above.
川岸の安全な場所から、
橋を支える部分に注目してみましょう。

One River, Several Names｜ひとつの川、いくつもの名前
Around Arashiyama,
you may hear three names:
Hozu River, Oi River,
and Katsura River.
They refer to different stretches of
the same river system.
The water keeps flowing,
even as the name changes along the way.
嵐山の辺りでは、
保津川・大堰川・桂川という名前を
耳にします。
同じ水系の川でも、
流れる区間によって呼び名が変わるのです。
名前が変わっても、
水の流れは続いています。
Now that we know a little
about the bridge,
let’s enjoy the scenery
from different angles.
橋のことを少し知ったところで、
今度は見る場所を変えて
景色を楽しんでみましょう。
Looking Downstream｜下流を眺める
Turn away from the mountain view
and look downstream.
The river continues
into a different landscape,
drawing your eyes along the water.
Even on the same bridge, turning around
can change the whole impression.
山々の景色から振り返り、
下流を眺めてみましょう。
川はまた違った風景へと続き、
水の流れに沿って視線が伸びていきます。
同じ橋の上でも、
向きを変えるだけで印象が変わります。

From the water,
the bridge and mountains
appear from a lower angle.
A familiar view can feel new when seen
from a boat.
川に浮かぶ屋形舟も、
嵐山らしい風景のひとつ。
水の上からは、橋も山々も
低い位置から見上げるように眺められます。
見慣れた景色も、
舟から見ると新鮮に感じられそうです。
When the Light Changes｜光が変わるとき
As evening approaches, the light over
the river grows softer.
The bridge, mountains, and water begin
to take on different colors.
Sometimes, you do not need to move.
Just wait for the light to change.
夕暮れが近づくと、
川を包む光がやわらかくなります。
橋も山々も水面も、
少しずつ違う色に。
場所を変えなくても、
光を待つだけで景色は変わります。

Togetsukyo is free to cross
and is generally accessible at any time.
Early mornings can be quieter.
During busy hours, take care around
pedestrians and vehicles.
Boat services depend on weather
and river conditions,
so check before visiting.
渡月橋は無料で渡れ、
通常は時間を問わず通行できます。
比較的静かな朝もおすすめ。
混雑時は歩行者や車に気をつけましょう。
舟の運航は天候や川の状況によって変わるため、
