The Sagano Romantic Train
travels through Hozugawa Gorge,
between Saga and Kameoka in Kyoto.
The journey takes about 25 minutes.

嵯峨野トロッコ列車は、
京都の嵯峨と亀岡を結び、
保津川渓谷を走る観光列車です。
乗車時間は約25分。

But this scenic railway
was not originally built for sightseeing.
Why does a former railway line
now carry visitors through the valley?

もともと観光のために
造られたものではありません。
なぜ、古い線路が
人気の観光鉄道になったのでしょうか。

From Old Tracks to a Scenic Railway｜古い線路が観光鉄道へ

The Sagano Romantic Train
began operating in 1991.
Its route follows a former section
of the JR San-in Main Line.

嵯峨野トロッコ列車は、
1991年に運行を始めました。
走っているのは、かつて
JR山陰本線として使われた線路です。

When trains moved to a newer route,
this section was no longer needed
for regular passenger services.
Instead of disappearing,
it found a new purpose.

新しい線路への切り替えによって、
通常の列車が走らなくなった旧線。
その線路は撤去されず、
景色を楽しむ観光鉄道として
新たな役割を持つことになりました。
